Elise Chalko

Welcome Elise Chalko!

LASD welcomes Elise Chalko as the newest Kindergarten Teacher at Lakeview Elementary!

What college/s did you attend while preparing for your assignment at LASD?

After high school I attended West Shore Community College where I received my Associate’s Degree. After finishing my education at West Shore I then attended Grand Valley State University where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with an Emphasis in Language Arts.

What do you like best about teaching?

I enjoy working with all age levels of students, but I have especially enjoyed the past three years of working with kindergarten students because I love seeing how much growth they have from the first day of school to the last day. It amazes me how much kindergartners can learn in one year of school and how much they change both academically and socially. I truly love that by the end of the school year they can read!

Share your favorite childhood school memory.

When I was a child I always loved the end of August and school supply shopping as a family. I remember we were always a “beach bum” family, but my mom made school supply shopping fun. We would grab our letters and lists from our teachers and head to Kmart in Manistee. We would find the theme that we wanted, whether it be polka dots or flowers, we all found our own theme and would pack our items into the cart. That night we would spend our time organizing our things and making sure everything was just right. I was always nervous and excited about the first day of school, but I remember being excited because I couldn’t wait to find my locker and my desk. I knew the classrooms would be “perfect” for the first day of school. I still remember how excited the teachers and students were when we all returned to school on the first day.

What are you most looking forward to working at LASD?

I am very excited to have team teachers in my grade level; Ronnie and Alan have already been so helpful and I can not  wait to be able to share ideas and collaborate with them  as a team. I am also so excited about meeting my new students and their parents. I have already begun to meet some of the families at Lakeview and when parents tell their child(ren) that I am the new kindergarten teacher their child’s face  seems to light up with excitement.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband, John, and my 11 month old son, Anderson. We are an “outside” family and we love to go for bike rides, walks, spend long days at the beach and enjoy spending time with our extended family.
