Rachel Rysdyk, LHS Science

What college/s did you attend while preparing for your assignment at LASD?

I attended Grand Valley State University for my undergraduate; I received a degree in Health Professions and minored in Biology. I then attended Michigan State University for my teaching certification in biology and integrated science.

What do you like best about teaching?

I like the relationships that I am able to build with my students. I like bringing in their experiences to the classroom and making them feel like a valued member of the learning community.

Share your favorite childhood school memory.

My first answer would probably be all of the time I was able to spend with friends every day. I was lucky to have a good group of friends that constantly pushed me to be the best students that I could be. I had a great group of science teachers that were constantly bringing in fun experiences to the classroom. I remember my biology teacher brought in a set of deer lungs (he was a hunter) and used them to demonstrate lung capacity. I liked that my teachers shared their personal experiences with us, it made learning more authentic.

What are you most looking forward to working at LASD?

I look forward to working with a new team of teachers. I look forward to hearing new ideas about content as well as teaching philosophy. I'm excited to build confidence in the classroom and using my peers as teammates in creating the best educational experience for students.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to be outdoors. I enjoy disc golf, hiking, and gardening. I'm looking forward to mastering the local disc golf courses! Also, I am excited to check out the Manistee National Forest and doing a few little mini adventures before the cooler weather sets in. Back in Leslie (south of Lansing), I have a small farm where I have my own organic garden, chickens, and honeybees! (Unfortunately, the apartment complex I live in now had restrictions on having 10 chickens and bees...so they are back in Leslie with my boyfriend.)
