2020 Michigan Principal of the Year
The Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association along with SET SEG announce Principal Brian Dotson as the 2020 Principal of the Year. Brian is the principal at Foster Elementary, a grades 3-5 building within Ludington Area School District. Brian was nominated by his colleagues at West Shore ESD and the educational community at Ludington Area School District.
The focus of the MEMSPA Principal of the Year Award is contributions to the well-being of the educational community; contributions to a positive environment/motivating and inspiring others; service and achievement in the community; recognition of leadership by the community; orderly and purposeful school leadership; and student achievement.
Brian’s nomination for MEMSPA Principal of Year was supported by dozens of administrative colleagues, dozens of teachers, dozens of parents, and dozens of local community leaders from church, charitable foundations, and chambers of commerce. Brian is dedicated to share “Some Good News in Ludington” as a way to build community, while focusing on positivity, optimism, and hope during the pandemic building closures.
Brian’s leadership contributions are recognized by state-wide education leaders as well. According to Sarah Shriver, Executive Director of Michigan State and Federal Program Specialists, “Brian anticipates the needs of this staff and students through the constant use of data. Brian utilizes a shared leadership style to build the capacity of his teachers, parents, and student leaders. Brian uses subtle humor to lead his stakeholders through uncertain times and he adapts to change quickly.”
As noted by the former West Shore ESD Director of Instructional Services, Linda Steigenga, “Brian can always be counted on to share ideas at principal meetings, push colleagues to learn about the latest research, and be a voice for what children need. His colleagues always look to him to speak up when conversations are difficult.”
At the building level one of his teachers Kris Anderson shares that “nobody supports their staff and builds unity like Brian.” Brian’s efforts to inspire students always seems to go beyond the norm. He reminds students that laughter is part of learning. As quoted by one student, “He’s out of his office a lot. He’s enthusiastic. He doesn’t judge you. He’s never grumpy. He makes the school better.”
A parent from Foster Elementary School shared, “as with most modest everyday heroes, Mr. Dotson carries himself with quiet humility and benevolence. I feel strongly, as do countless local parents, that he deserves recognition to his deep dedication to our local students’ wellbeing, success, safety, and security. Because of Mr. Dotson’s consistency and leadership, the youth of Ludington have excellent educational opportunities and guidance. We are deeply grateful for his role in the local school district and hope that his impact on our local youth is never diminished.”
MEMSPA is very proud to present Mr. Brian Dotson as its Principal of the Year for 2020.
