LASD lockdown information

LASD Families,

4:33 update, police report both subject in custody.

Today, two high school students were reported to have brandished a weapon in the parking lot of Mason County Central High School and then left the parking lot. We had constant communication with law enforcement after this event to ensure that there was no direct threat to Ludington schools.

Despite no clear connection to Ludington schools but due to the proximity of Scottville, we took precautions to limit entry into the buildings by going into a soft lockdown and having indoor recess. Law enforcement confirmed that we could dismiss at our usual time and that they would have presence at each of our buildings. At the time of this letter being written, one of the two students is in the custody of law enforcement.

The fastest way for us to send communications to parents is through text messages. We would encourage all parents to check with the school office to make sure their cell phone numbers are correct in PowerSchool. In the future, the district will also make sure to send out all text messages in the form of an email. These updates all occurred very quickly this afternoon and we communicated what information we had as quickly as we could.

Our hearts are heavy with the recent events at Michigan State University and our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was impacted. We know that with these recent events, our thoughts often assume the worst, which is why the school communicated as quickly as we did. The district will continue to work on sending out timely information the best that we can and follow up with more thorough information, such as this letter, as soon as possible.

Thank you to our School Resource Officers and our local law enforcement for their efforts today to make sure that our students and community are safe.
